On February 4, 2025, the State Central Committee of the Libertarian Party of Indiana (LPIN) took a firm stand for justice and human rights, unanimously passing a resolution against the expansion of Guantanamo Bay and CIA black site prisons. Denouncing the erosion of due process and systemic human rights abuses, the resolution calls for an immediate halt to these operations. It demands that all detainees be granted fair trials or released, urging elected officials to honor their duty to uphold constitutional and human rights protections. With this resolution, LPIN reaffirms its unwavering commitment to liberty, justice, and the fundamental rights of all individuals—regardless of nationality or circumstance.

RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE EXPANSION OF GUANTANAMO BAY

WHEREAS, the Libertarian Party of Indiana believes in the sovereignty and liberty of the individual, the unalienable rights of life, liberty, property, the pursuit of happiness, and due process for all people regardless of nationality or status; and

WHEREAS, the President of the United States has announced plans to use the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to house migrants to the United States, while expanding it to hold 30,000 people; and

WHEREAS, moving migrants to an area outside of the United States territory will allow for human rights abuses and the violation of due process rights for otherwise-peaceful people who are being held against their will, as there will be little to no possibility for oversight due to its extraterritorial nature and location; and

WHEREAS, the processes being followed stand in opposition to the founding principles of the United States to respect due process and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and are in opposition to our values of a free and just society for all; and

WHEREAS, using and expanding facilities such as Guantanamo Bay and other CIA-operated facilities will further allow for government overreach and the erosion of civil liberties and fundamental human rights under the guise of national security; and

WHEREAS, the utilization of Guantanamo Bay or any similar facility for the detention of individuals—whether they be foreign combatants, asylum seekers, or non-violent immigrants—constitutes a blatant disregard for constitutional protections – including the right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment – as well as the rule of law; and

WHEREAS, the Libertarian Party of Indiana strongly and fully opposes any form of torture, cruel and unusual punishment, detention without due process, Constitutional violations, violations of civil liberties, and extraterritorial detention for the purpose of violating those liberties, because those practices are abhorrent to the cause of liberty and are incompatible with a free and just society; and

RESOLVED, that the Libertarian Party of Indiana condemns and opposes any and all efforts to expand the Guantanamo Bay detention center or any other detention centers like it, for the purpose of detaining migrants without due process, and that the Libertarian Party of Indiana calls for the immediate closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention center and any centers like it, and that any individuals who are currently detained be either released or granted access to a speedy and fair trial, as guaranteed in the Constitution; and

RESOLVED, that the Libertarian Party of Indiana urges all elected officials and government agencies to uphold and protect the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights conventions for all people in the United States, regardless of country of origin or status, and that government rejects the use of indefinite detention and torture in all forms.
Adopted by the Libertarian Party of Indiana on February 4th, 2025.
