Libertarian Party of Indiana calls for veto of vaping bill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF INDIANA CALLS FOR VETO OF VAPING BILL

(Indianapolis) In an open letter to Governor Mike Pence, Libertarian Party of Indiana State Chairman Joe Hauptmann called for the governor’s veto of job-killing legislation that would primarily impact emerging small businesses across the state.

Legislation with strict regulations targeting small businesses with an interest in the manufacturing and sale of e-liquids used in the emerging vaping industry won approval by both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly and now sits on Governor Pence’s desk. The legislation would give preference to large tobacco companies and e-liquid producers over the interests of Indiana-based small businesses.

In his letter Hauptmann stressed the profound impact signing this legislation could have on Hoosier business.

“HB 1432 puts nearly 200 small businesses and over 1,800 gainfully employed Hoosiers in jeopardy,” wrote Hauptmann. “The lack of product choices and the cost of compliance will force many small business to close their doors.”

Hauptmann continued, “Interstate commerce is also a concern. This legislation will place unheard of and unlawful restrictions on out-of-state manufacturers. This bill tries to assert authority over an out-of-state manufacturer’s production process, facility design, security measures, and personnel. This is not done to any other industry and is clearly unconstitutional.”

The legislation expands manufacturing requirements beyond similar DIY industries, including homebrewing, wine making, dry tobacco and other adult products.
