With less than two months remaining in a four-way race for Secretary of State, Libertarian Lauri Shillings was the first declared candidate and the first to be nominated for the ballot. But she is not just running to become Indiana’s next Secretary of State, she’s running to ensure Hoosiers have a Libertarian voice for the next four years.
The Libertarian Party of Indiana is fully aware of the implications should Lauri earn 10% or more of the votes in the upcoming Secretary of State race, and earn the LPIN major party status in Indiana.
“For years, we have operated with a long‑term plan built on the understanding that our sustained hard work would eventually pay off — positioning us to become a major minor party in Indiana, even if that status is achieved county by county rather than statewide all at once,” LPIN chair Stephanie Dasbach said.
Today, the Libertarian Party of Indiana has approximately 40 formally affiliated counties and more than 400 active members, with organizational presence and activity extending across 66 counties across Indiana.
This foundation has allowed us to build and refine procedures, strengthen communication channels, and coordinate effectively with both our county affiliates and district representatives.
If Shillings receives the most or second-most votes in any county, the Libertarian Party would be entitled to a seat on that county’s election board for the next four years. We have ensured that qualified individuals are prepared and available for appointment to any newly opened positions should major‑party status be triggered at the county level.
“Our teams are ready, willing, and organized to move forward should the political landscape shift,” Dasbach said. “The groundwork has been laid, the personnel are in place, and the Libertarian Party of Indiana stands prepared to meet its responsibilities and opportunities when Lauri Shillings places first or second either statewide, or in individual counties.”
