LP National: Libertarians issue warning to Tea Partiers

WASHINGTON – Looking toward the 9/12 Tea Party events in Washington, DC, Libertarian Party executive director Wes Benedict issued the following warning to Tea Partiers: “Republicans are trying to fool you again.”

“There are two kinds of Tea Partiers,” said Benedict. “One kind is so blinded by its hatred of Obama and Democrats that it cannot see fault with Republicans. It’s the other kind the Libertarian Party is reaching out to.”

Libertarian Party staff and volunteers will participate in the Washington, DC Tea Party events on September 12. They will distribute flyers pointing out how the Top 10 Disasters of the 2009-2010 Obama administration mirror the Top 10 Disasters of the 2001-2008 Bush administration.

Benedict continued, “Libertarians have much in common with Tea Party goals of reducing government spending and taxes. While many Tea Party supporters will admit that George W. Bush’s administration grew government, Libertarians want to remind Tea Partiers about previous Republican administrations that loved big government.

Reason Magazine Comes To The Defense of the Tea Party Movement

Finally!  Someone who actually understands statistical analysis comes to the defense of the Tea Party Movement to expose some of the more vicious myths about our fellow Americans.

Ever since the “Tea Parties” gained national attention, the debate has raged on whether they are a grass-roots protest movement in the proud tradition of American dissent, or a hysterical mob driven by fear, intolerance, and selfishness. Recently, two much-discussed surveys—aCBS/New York Times poll and a multi-state University of Washington poll—have been bandied about as proof that the leftist caricatures of the Tea Partiers as mean-spirited rich white bigots are accurate. Yet a look at the data suggests that this interpretation is highly skewed by political bias.

Advice to Tea Partiers

John Samples (author of The Struggle to Limit Government) and the Cato Institute offer advice to Tea Partiers in this video clip best summarized by these five bullet points:

1. Republicans aren’t always your friends.
2. Some tea partiers like big government.
3. Democrats aren’t always your enemies.
4. Smaller government demands restraint abroad.
5. Leave social issues to the states.

NYT and CBS conduct national poll of Tea Party Supporters

A national survey of tea party supporters conducted by the New York Times and CBS News has yielded some interesting results.  Despite the overarching narrative that the Tea Party Movement is a predominantly male movement, the survey found that the Tea Party actually only split 59%/41% in favor of males.  Additional findings of note included that your average Tea Party supporter was better educated, had a slightly higher income, and was only slightly more ”conservative” than your average American (though little distinction was made between social conservatives and economic conservatives so this result could be slightly skewed).

You can look at a PDF of the full results here.

What Value, Tea Partiers?

When not being denigrated as ‘teabaggers’, when not painted with a broad brush by focusing on the nuts any group has, the Tea Partiers can bring great value to the public discourse. For one thing, several of the Tea Partiers I know and have met have an excellent knowledge and grasp of the US Constitution.
