Apply for the LNC At-Large Opening!

With the resignation of Wayne Allyn Root from the LNC, we have an opening for an At-Large position on the LNC.

The procedure specified by our Bylaws gives the full authority for the replacement to the LNC. This replacement election could conceivably be handled through a mail ballot, but I see no haste in filling this vacancy, and mail ballots are just a little clunky for elections, so I expect that this position will be filled at the next LNC meeting, which is scheduled for November 17th and 18th in Arlington, Virginia.

RACE FOR LIBERTARIAN PARTY NATIONAL CHAIR HEATS UP

Indianapolis, Indiana– The race for national chair of the Libertarian party just became more interesting. Late last night, speaking to a room full of supporters at an Indianapolis eatery, Mark Rutherford, the current national vice chair, announced his candidacy for the party’s top position.

“I have been tremendously impressed with the shift in the political climate in America towards restoring individual rights and personal freedoms. More and more, Americans are realizing that the two-party system is not working to solve our country’s problems. I truly believe that with the proper leadership this is the year the Libertarian party can offer the choice that America desperately needs. Therefore, I am pleased to announce my candidacy for chair of the National party.”

Rutherford, who is widely regarded as a “political optimist” within the party, will emphasize his many years of proven leadership to distinguish himself from his opponent. A long time party member and political activist, Rutherford has served as chairman of the Libertarian party of Indiana from 2000-2007 and on the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) from 2001-2006. He also currently serves as President on the board of multiple well-known community and political organizations, such as Advocates for Self Government, Atlas!Liberty PAC, and the Woodstock Club. So far, Rutherford’s only opponent to announce his candidacy is the current national chair, Mark Hinkle.

The Libertarian National Convention will be held in Las Vegas May 4-6th at the Red Rock Resort. Highlights of the convention will include nomination for the Libertarian candidate for president and national chair. Supporters will cast their votes for Rutherford on Saturday May 6th.

National Libertarian Party Seeking Volunteers to Revamp Technology Strategy

The Libertarian National Committee and the Libertarian State Leadership Alliance have voted to revamp and standardize the Libertarian Party’s technology strategy. The LNC has funded a new project to develop database and website platforms for all levels of the party including candidates, local, state and the national party.

“Our goal (vision) is to enable affiliates to focus on building the LP, not be distracted with technology and IT organizational issues,” said Brett Pojunis of theLibertarian State Leadership Alliance. “There will be a Libertarian website for every state, county and city that wants one. All public information available, such as voter registrations, and automated syncing of the National Data Dump (LP provided), will be aggregated and organized and more importantly, available. This will lead to additional exposure for the LP as well as additional membership.”.

Recently, the LSLA commissioned the Online Technologies Standardization Committee. Indiana’s Executive Director, Chris Spangle, served as a voting member of this committee. The committee helped plan a presentation to the LNC for funding. The LNC this past weekend voted to fund development of a new database system for CiviCRM and Joomla.

“The OTS Committee, having completed its work, is now disbanded and the LSLA is creating a permanent LSLA IT Committee,” said Pojunis.” The goal of the LSLA IT committee is to launch this complete project by the National Convention in May 2012.

Pojunis continued, “We are actively seeking qualified members for the LSLA IT Committee to assist with the overall direction of this project. The LSLA is going to contract this work with a professional development firm and the IT Committee will participate by providing input to the project.”

As you are aware, the 2012 national LP convention will be held on the first week of May in Las Vegas, Nevada. Delegations will be credentialed from each state.

How big and how important do you want Region 3 to play in this?

YOU DO have influence on our standing at the national convention.

HOW?

There are two factors in the size of the delegation.

  1. One relates to past presidential election results for the LP candidate in the respective state.
  2. The other is much more under our control and is directly based on “sustaining membership” in the NATIONAL PARTY. Sustaining membership is determined by a person having signed the “LP Pledge of non-aggression” and contributing $25 to the national party.

But, there is ONE IMPORTANT DEADLINE – it is coming up FAST – the deadline to contribute to the national party will be October 31, 2011!!!!!!

Please go to www.lp.org/membership and contribute $25 asap-especially if you have not contributed anything this year.

I am assuming you have signed the national pledge. If not, please do it again.

With a large delegation, we can control some of the activities and decisions being made, including the selection of the 2012 POTUS nominee. Even if we don’t fill all the seats, we still have power.

HOW?

Because there is a fixed overall number of delegates, which can not be exceeded. So for now, lets get our seat count allocation at the convention maximized and worry about filling those same seats later.

And let’s not forget that we have positions on some important national committees at the convention, such as the Platform and Credentials.

Please understand that just because you contribute $25 to the national today, does not mean you are required to go to the convention. But it does help with the final delegation allotments by the national party.

Libertarian National Committee’s Statement on Libya

WASHINGTON – Giving little thought to the lessons of history, President Obama has begun attacking Libya with the full support of virtually every member of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans. Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle issued the following statement today:

“President Obama’s decision to order military attacks on Libya is only surprising to those who actually think he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. He has now ordered bombing strikes in six different countries, adding Libya to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen.

“While the justifications vary in each case, the disturbing common thread is that these are all predominantly Muslim countries. And the goodwill expressed by Arab people about Obama in opinion polls early in his administration has completely vanished: in the most recent Zogby survey, 85% expressed an unfavorable opinion toward the United States, eclipsing the 83% negative opinion in the final year of the Bush administration.

“Libyan President Muammar Gadaffi is no friend of liberty, but the military involvement of the United States in the rebellion against him threatens to undermine the credibility of the resistance to his rule and turn him into a hero. As news of both actual and rumored killings of innocent civilians by American bombs spreads throughout the Arab world, the hatred which spawned the 9/11 murderers will continue to grow. Finally, what if Gadaffi still manages to defeat the rebels? Faced with the choice of losing face or upping the ante with an escalation of military involvement, this could turn into yet another disastrous campaign. And as Steve Chapman put it in an article in Reason magazine, ‘Most of the people endorsing an attack know less about Libya than they do about playing the oboe.’ When will we ever learn?

“Libertarians advocate the foreign policy eloquently described by Thomas Jefferson at his inauguration: ‘Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none.’ Just as the Founding Fathers expressed admiration for the ‘Swiss Model’ of armed neutrality that has managed to keep Switzerland out of the vicious wars of Europe for hundreds of years, we should embrace the idea that the purpose of an American military is the defense of American soil, period. As Senator Barack Obama said in criticizing the Bush administration, ‘The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.’

“The Constitution of the United States requires an explicit Declaration of War in order for this country to engage in hostilities with foreign nations. Obama, after dithering for two weeks, has joined the list of presidents who chose to launch wars on their personal say-so in direct contravention of the Constitution.

“I don’t know how many times we have to endure administrations, both Republican and Democratic, who shoot first and ask questions later. Probably for as long as we continue to elect Republicans and Democrats to office.”

The Libertarian Party platform includes the following:

3.1 National Defense
We support the maintenance of a sufficient military to defend the United States against aggression. The United States should both avoid entangling alliances and abandon its attempts to act as policeman for the world. We oppose any form of compulsory national service.

LP Chair: The problem in Wisconsin is Not Unions but Government

WASHINGTON – While Republicans and Democrats battle in Wisconsin over a bill to reduce the collective bargaining power of state employee unions as a means of balancing their budget, Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle points out that the problem lies with government control of activities it has no business running.

Hinkle comments, “Libertarians are neither pro-union nor anti-union. We believe that the right of association and freedom of contract allows any group of people to choose to bargain collectively rather than individually. Naturally, we oppose violence and threats of such, but unions per se can play a major role in a free society. The problem is that the battle between the Wisconsin state government and state employees isn’t even remotely a free market.

“Government monopolizes many services that could and should be provided in the voluntary sector by profit-making and/or non-profit organizations. This also gives them a ‘monopsony’ as virtually the only potential employer for workers in these fields. Once someone has trained to be a teacher or prison guard, they are essentially at the mercy of government for their employment in that field. Blaming them for wanting collective bargaining representation would be comparable to siding with the Polish government against the union Solidarity headed by Lech Walesa that freed Poland in 1989 from Soviet rule. The problem is with the employer: the government.”

Hinkle considers the education budget to be the best example of a solution only Libertarians have offered:

“Far and away the largest part of the budget of the State of Wisconsin, once aid to local governments is allocated to underlying expenditures, is in the category of education. This is true of virtually all state and local governments, so it is the best example of how freedom can provide a solution. Unfortunately, government expenditures for education are driven by political considerations rather than the needs of the students. The result is outrageous costs that are not primarily for the most important ingredient in education: the teacher.

“The U.S. Department of Education calculates that the per pupil cost of K-12 education is nearly $11,000 in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. The Cato Institute, however, in a paper entitled, ‘They Spend WHAT? The Real Cost of Public Schools,’ discovered that actual spending in the districts they examined was 44 percent higher than official reports due to the failure to include various categories (such as spending financed by bond issuances). We can reasonably estimate that true spending is more than $15,000 per pupil. With class sizes, on average, exceeding 20, the total spending per classroom is probably well in excess of $300,000. Obviously, most of that money isn’t going to the teacher in the classroom. In private schools that don’t depend on taxpayers, it does: teacher pay and benefits averages nearly 80% of the total budget of the average private school. Not surprisingly, while private schools are often described as havens for the rich, public school spending per pupil is nearly DOUBLE the average private school tuition, mainly because it is a haven for administrators and other recipients of `education’ money who never step foot into a classroom.

“The answer to Wisconsin’s budget crisis, and that of governments throughout the country, is to return education to the voluntary sector. Compulsory education dominated by tax-supported schools was not established until the mid-1850s, yet literacy rates prior to that time were higher than they are today. Parents have ALWAYS valued the education of their children, and the religious and secular private schools of that time knew they’d only be paid by parents if they taught their children. Free or reduced costs for poor parents was always part of the tradition, and would be again in a country freed of massive taxation and spending.

“Returning education to the voluntary sector and eliminating compulsory funding and attendance laws, not to mention centralized bureaucratic nightmares such as the bi-partisan No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 championed by Republican President George W. Bush and the late Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy, will free teachers to be responsive to the needs of their students instead of the desires of politicians. As for how to do it quickly, a case can be made for selling all the local schools and putting the proceeds into the underfunded pension and benefits funds, then leaving the reorganization of education in the hands of the buyers. But, the workers at these schools are the ones with the strongest interest in ownership. We could just give each school to its local employees and let them decide whether to run it or sell it. Either way, the teachers, the students, the parents, and the taxpayers are all big winners.

“Education is the largest item in the Wisconsin budget, but the same principle applies to other expenditures. The legitimate debate in Wisconsin and elsewhere is not about whether the politicians or the government employee unions should win. It is why we should be stuck with only one employer sucking the money from taxpayers and then complaining when their power to decide how it is spent is not unlimited.”

The Libertarian Party platform includes the following:

2.7 Labor Markets
We support repeal of all laws which impede the ability of any person to find employment. We oppose government-fostered forced retirement. We support the right of free persons to associate or not associate in labor unions, and an employer should have the right to recognize or refuse to recognize a union. We oppose government interference in bargaining, such as compulsory arbitration or imposing an obligation to bargain.

2.8 Education
Education, like any other service, is best provided by the free market, achieving greater quality and efficiency with more diversity of choice. Schools should be managed locally to achieve greater accountability and parental involvement. Recognizing that the education of children is inextricably linked to moral values, we would return authority to parents to determine the education of their children, without interference from government. In particular, parents should have control of and responsibility for all funds expended for their children’s education.

Libertarian Party: America Should Stop Interfering in Egypt

WASHINGTON – Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle released the following statement today:

“Media reports tell us that the Obama administration is heavily involved in the current crisis in Egypt. It shouldn’t be.

“Personally, my sympathies are with the Egyptian protesters. Our very own Declaration of Independence said that government exists to secure people’s rights, and ‘whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.’

“However, it would be wrong for me to force all Americans to adopt my point of view and support my choice in this crisis. But that’s exactly what the Obama administration is doing, by interfering in the crisis and inevitably taking sides.

“The instances of U.S. foreign meddling over the last hundred years are too numerous to list here. But in almost every case, U.S. intervention has made American taxpayers poorer, and it has usually served to entrench corrupt authoritarian rulers. In the worst cases, like Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, military intervention has caused the deaths of many Americans and far more foreigners.

“This includes all types of intervention: military intervention, foreign aid, and ‘behind-the-scenes’ intervention using diplomacy and espionage.

“Libertarians call for the U.S. government to stop interfering in the Egyptian crisis, and to end foreign aid to all nations, including Egypt.

“American interventionism also gives foreign governments an excuse to copy us. Instead of respecting their neighbors’ sovereignty and independence, foreign governments often interfere with each other, and they often use examples of American intervention as a justification.

“Unfortunately, powerful politicians in Washington can’t seem to resist the temptation to meddle in foreign countries’ affairs. This tendency is made worse by self-serving bureaucracies like the CIA, which rely on foreign meddling to keep their workers employed.

“Our government should leave other nations alone. The future of Egypt is for the Egyptian people to decide, not Washington politicians.”

The Libertarian Party platform plank on international affairs states:

“American foreign policy should seek an America at peace with the world. Our foreign policy should emphasize defense against attack from abroad and enhance the likelihood of peace by avoiding foreign entanglements. We would end the current U.S. government policy of foreign intervention, including military and economic aid. We recognize the right of all people to resist tyranny and defend themselves and their rights. We condemn the use of force, and especially the use of terrorism, against the innocent, regardless of whether such acts are committed by governments or by political or revolutionary groups.”

Libertarians: Tea Party betrayed by tiny Republican budget cuts

WASHINGTON – According to The Hill, House Republicans have just announced that they will seek appropriations for the rest of 2011 that are $32 billion below current spending levels.

LP Chair Mark Hinkle commented, “The Tea Party supporters have been betrayed. These cuts are so small, you need a microscope to find them.”

Hinkle continued, “The Congressional Budget Office just told us that federal spending was expected to be about $3.7 trillion this year. After the Republican cuts, it will still be about $3.7 trillion. The Republican cuts are so tiny, they disappear in the rounding error.

“Even with these cuts, the federal deficit will be over $1.4 trillion this year.

“It doesn’t help that Congressional Republicans voted for more unemployment spending and ethanol subsidies last December, or that they want to keep increasing military spending. And they haven’t come up with any serious cuts to entitlements.

“I think the Tea Party supporters were expecting real cuts, not this nonsense. We tried to warn Tea Party supporters last year that the Republicans were just trying to fool them again. It looks like we were right.

“Oh, I’m sure we’ll hear Republicans say they’re just getting started, and more cuts are coming…just not yet. But I hope the Tea Party supporters and other fiscal conservatives wake up and smell the deficits. Our children are going to drown in debt, and the Republicans aren’t going to save them. Republicans are part of the problem, not the solution.

“Tea Party supporters and other fiscal conservatives should support Libertarians, not Republicans. Libertarians would make dramatic cuts in spending, and if angry Republicans and Democrats threatened to shut down the government instead, Libertarians would say ‘Fine.’”

Libertarian Party condemns shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

WASHINGTON – Mark Hinkle, Chair of the Libertarian Party, issued a statement condemning the shooting of Congressional Representative Gabrielle Giffords, and others in Tucson, Arizona. According to reports, federal Judge John Roll and five others were killed in the shooting, and several others were seriously wounded.

“The Libertarian Party condemns the shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and others today. We are saddened by the loss of life, the suffering of those who survived the shooting, and the grief and sorrow of their family and friends.

“This shooting was wrong, and is the kind of abhorrent political violence that threatens our freedoms.

“The Libertarian Party opposes the initiation of force and violence whether it is politically motivated or for other reasons. To become a member of the Libertarian Party, people are required to sign a statement certifying that they oppose the initiation of force to achieve political or social goals.

“Regardless of the motives and other circumstances surrounding the killing, the Libertarian Party maintains its steadfast defense of the Second Amendment and the uncompromising right to gun ownership. In a free society, citizens should be free to arm and protect themselves, their families, and their property. Sadly, because of restrictions placed on responsible gun owners by all levels of government, many people avoid carrying weapons that could be used to stop mass shootings.

“Our condolences go out to the victims and their families. We wish them a speedy and full recovery.”

LP Monday Message: Republicans Jack Up Government Spending

Dear Friend of Liberty,

I’m sure you’ve seen the media reports of how President Obama and the Republicans are making deals for big increases in government spending (while keeping tax rates very high). Ethanol subsidies, more unfunded unemployment spending, etc.

About a week ago, Republican leader Mitch McConnell said, “I think the current [35%] tax rate is appropriate for our country.” No it isn’t, it’s way too high. In fact, I don’t think there should even be an income tax. Section 2.4 of the Libertarian Party Platform calls for the abolition of the IRS.

When I heard Republicans repeat the words “less government” on the campaign trail this year, I wasn’t fooled. I knew they were lying. I hope you weren’t fooled either.

Unlike the Republicans, we Libertarians believe in cutting government spending. In fact, we want to cut spending across the board — and that includes the military, Social Security, and Medicare. And we want to get rid of ethanol subsidies and other corporate welfare — while the Republicans vote to increase it.

LP National: FCC Should Remain Neutral on Net Neutrality

The Federal Communications Commission chairman, Julius Genachowski, released a statement on December 1st addressing the issue of net neutrality.  The FCC has proposed several regulations that would stop internet service providers from blocking or promoting any website over another. Essentially, internet users will be able to search any website they want without discretion from broadband companies. This proposal is set for a vote on December 21st, and if passed, the FCC will be able to regulate “net neutrality.”

But this FCC action is unwarranted and unfavorable both now and in the long run.

National LP: Libertarians Mourn Death of David F. Nolan

I’m sad to tell you that David Nolan, one of the founders of the Libertarian Party, died yesterday. Below is the text of a press release we sent today.

WASHINGTON – David F. Nolan, one of the founders of the Libertarian Party (LP), died unexpectedly on November 21 in Tucson, Arizona at the age of 66.

Mr. Nolan was also a member of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC). He is survived by his wife Elizabeth.

Mr. Nolan founded the Libertarian Party with a group of colleagues in his home in Denver, Colorado on December 11, 1971.

Sad News – David Nolan, R.I.P.

Libertarians across the country were saddened to learn that a co-founder of the Libertarian Party, David Nolan, had died suddenly Saturday night. The Libertarian Party was actually formed in Nolan’s living room. There are many articles in response. Here’s a small sampling:
