Video of the Day: So Much For Lemonade Freedom Day

In an already Struggling Economy and deep Depression, Police will arrest you from selling lemonade at the Washington Capital.

Ed Coleman’s Big Weekend

Ed Coleman is an Indianapolis City-County Councilman. He won election four years ago as a Republican running at-large, but before long, he grew very disenchanted with the Republican Party and the dictatorial leadership on the Council that wanted him to vote contrary to his principles and conscience, and toe the line. So, he defected to the Libertarian Party.

Ed is now running for re-election, as a Libertarian candidate, but this time running only for his district. The difference is gigantic, as an at-large candidate has to appeal to the entire city’s voters, while a district candidate can focus attention within the boundaries.

This weekend, the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) made a significant contribution to Ed’s campaign: $50,000. From the Libertarian Party of Indiana

LNC Donates $50,000 to the Re-Election of Ed Coleman

The Libertarian National Committee has voted to make a significant contribution to Re-election of Indianapolis City-County Councilor Ed Coleman. The LNC will contribute $50,000 to the highest ranking Libertarian official in the United States seeking to stay on the Council. Coleman was elected in 2007 to office as a Republican to an At-Large seat on the council, and switched after his punishment by the party for standing on libertarian principles.

“This is not just a game-changer for my race, but also for the entire Libertarian Party,” said Councilor Ed Coleman. “We hope this serves as a signal to all elected Republicans and Democrats that standing on principle doesn’t mean campaigning alone. The party of principle will work to help elect and re-elect Libertarians to make true change in the political arena. I would like to thank the LNC for recognizing this opportunity, and stepping up to keep the libertarian message moving forward.”

Coleman will use the additional funds to increase the footprint of his campaign. This is the most money that the national party has donated to a single candidate for their race.

“I am thrilled to see the LNC donate to the re-election of Ed,” said Sam Goldstein, Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Indiana. “I truly believe that this will become a watershed moment for the Libertarian Party in Indianapolis, Indiana, and on the national stage. Our party has made a statement that we are fully committed to electing and re-electing Libertarians to partisan office.”

Video of the Day: Daniel Hannan — A Letter of Warning to America

A journalist and author, Daniel Hannan has been a British member of the European Parliament since 1999. He first came to wide notice in the United States when he made a speech on the floor of the European Parliament addressing the then-prime minister of Great Britain, Gordon Brown, about his disastrous economic policies. Hannan’s latest book is A New Road to Serfdom: A Letter of Warning to America.

LPIN Podcast: LPIN Vice Chair Jerry Titus

Jerry Titus was elected as the Vice Chair of the Libertarian Party of Indiana this previous spring. Jerry discusses what role a Vice Chair serves in a political party, why he gives up so much of his own free time for political organizing, and what motives him most.

Video of the Day: What Are Rights?

Individuals have rights. But are they natural? And how do they compare and contrast with legal or constitutional rights? Are legal or constitutional rights similar to those inalienable rights mentioned in the Declaration of Independence? Professor Aeon Skoble distinguishes such constitutional rights, such as the right to vote, from the rights protected by governments and constitutions—natural rights not actually granted by governments themselves. He concludes that legal systems should create rights that are combatable with natural rights.

Video of the Day: The Cost of the War on Drugs

June 17, 2011 marks the 40th Anniversary of Nixon’s War on Drugs. Ever wonder what it costs and if it’s worth it?

Video of the Day: Signs of Nullification

Frontline recently put out a documentary on California’s growing medical marijuana industry. This has caused many pointed discussions and threats by the Federal Government towards California for ignoring their wishes. Could a spirit of nullification be growing?

Video of the Day: The Broken Ratings Agency System

Jon Stewart interviews an expert on the broken ratings agency system.

Video of the Day: Rick Santelli on Obama’s Leadership

Santelli unloads a fresh barrage of reality into CNBC, the Network of sObama’s Court Financial Analysts, with daily analysis from an endless string of Keynesian Fed-o-phile bobbleheads. As they discuss S&P’s downgrade of America’s credit rating from AAA to AA+.. Notice at the end, when everyone starts cheering Santelli, the segment gets cut off. Sort of like they do with Schiff. The CNBC econo-morons can’t refute anything Schiff says so they wait until he can’t respond to make their arguments.

Featherstone: Rivera’s Proposal Attacks Indy’s Poor, Neighborhoods, and Private Property Owners

(Josh Featherstone is the 7th District Representative for the LPIN State Central Committee. Blog originally posted here.)

On June 27th, At-Large City-County Councillor Angel Rivera introduced what became Proposal #188.  According to the digest of the proposed ordinance, it “amends portions of the code pertaining to the permitting, licensing, and organization of activities related to special events licensed by the department of code enforcement, and adds a new chapter creating an annual license for ticket broker engaged in the sale or resale of tickets on public streets, sidewalks, and alleys.”

Oh, is that all?   Well that sounds innocent enough, I guess.  Like most digests and summaries these days, though, it’s a nicely written paragraph that has very little to do with what the bill or ordinance contains.  In reality, they are written the way they are so folks like you and I with a little political interest look at the digest and move on, uninterested.

Let me tell you a little secret that Angel Rivera and any other supporters of Proposal 188 don’t want you to know:  This ordinance is an all-out attack on property owners, neighborhoods, and the poor in our city, especially downtown and especially because of one week of festivities surrounding the 2012 Super Bowl.

Let’s break 188 down…

Atlas Liberty: A Libertarian Perspective on the August 2011 “Week of Woe”

Originally posted at Atlas Liberty. By Evan McMahon.

The news headlines last week were unlike any we’ve seen before: “S.& P. Downgrades U.S. Debt Rating for the First Time”.

The Democrats and Republicans who have been at the helm for the past 40 years have wrecked the U.S. economy, as evidenced by last week’s S&P downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, the selling off of global equity markets in the fear of a “double-dip” recession, and the failure to resolve any long-term structural problems with the U.S. budget.

The past week will go down in U.S. financial history as one of the most dramatic.

On Tuesday August 2nd, after a wrenching battle in Washington, President Obama and Congress agreed to a budget package that raised the debt ceiling by $2 trillion, and formed a committee to propose spending cuts by November of this year.
