Heartland Institute: Health Care Law’s Hidden Tax Provision: 1099s Could Quintuple in 2012

Written By: Neil deMause of the Heartland Institute

An until-now unnoticed provision of the new health care overhaul law could change the way U.S. businesses—including freelance workers—prepare for tax day, causing an avalanche of additional record keeping and reporting.

According to Section 9006 of the 2,409-page Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, beginning on January 1, 2012 all businesses will have to issue 1099 tax forms not just to contractors but to any individual or corporation from which they buy more than $600 in goods or services in a tax year. Currently 1099s need only be issued to individuals, not  corporations.

The requirement will now include items such as shipping charges, hotel bills, and equipment purchases, all currently exempt from 1099 reporting.

Dr. Walter Block to Speak in Indiana

(Editor’s Note: A group of Indiana libertarian college students are bringing libertarian economist Dr. Walter Block to speak in Indiana. This is a message from the organizer, George Edwards.)

Going to college is quite an experience for most young people. They are
exploring themselves within the realm of ideas and challenging the
sacrosanct conventions of their youth. When I started attending IU
Kokomo it seemed like there was a barrage of state worship from the left
and right. We were taught that the state could handle any problem if we
JUST had the right person in charge. Of course, they are both
historically wrong and theoretically wrong. It took one weekend at the
Mises Institute to change my world view hearing from such speakers as
Walter Block, Tom Dilorenzo, Tom Woods, and Ralph Raico.

Do as I say, Not as I do….

You’ve probably seen the above video. It’s North Carolina Congressman Bob Etheridge roughing up a person that approached him to ask some questions of the Congressman. I did some checking, and found out that assaulting a federal official, when bodily contact occurs, can be considered a Class D felony.

That means if the young man had done to Mr. Etheridge, what Mr. Etheridge did to the young man, that young man could be facing 20 years in prison, a $100,000.00 fine, and then deportation.

What is this new “Comprehensive Energy Policy?” $7 per gallon gas

Here’s the long and short of this “comprehensive energy plan” they want to pass: For 40 years, no President has “found” a solution getting us off of oil. The Free Market has no desire because most believe oil isn’t near its peak point. SO the Democrats want to put ENORMOUS tax increases on all carbon based energy (your… monthly electric bill and gas) to outrage you at the price of oil, forcing the government and major corporations to immediately find solutions to lower the price. There is NO plan to get us off any oil at this moment.

LPIN Podcast: Ed Coleman on Indianapolis’ Water Proposal

Some decisions follow a clear ideological path. Others, such as the City of Indianapolis’ proposed sale of the water utility, can be a little tricky. What is the best deal for the residents of the City?  Is it better to sell to a private operator, even if that operation then becomes a government enforced monopoly?

Indianapolis’ Libertarian City-County Councilman Ed Coleman navigates the waters of idealism and realism, and partisan politics, in city government.
