Libertarian Party of Wayne County Announces First Candidates for 2012 Election Cycle

Two local Libertarians have announced that they will seek their party’s nomination to run for office in 2012. Rex Bell, of Hagerstown, hopes to receive the nod for U.S. House of Representatives District 6 seat, currently held by Mike Pence. Jeremiah Morrell, of New Castle, will be going after the recently re-configured District 54 seat of the Indiana House, currently held by Thomas Saunders. Bell has previously been the Libertarian candidate for the District 54 seat. This is Morrell’s first run for office.

The Libertarian Party selects it’s state and federal candidates at it’s spring convention.

“Libertarians have made some significant gains in east central Indiana and across the state in the last few years”, said Bell. “In the District 54 race in 2010, the Libertarians managed to win a few precincts, and even finish ahead of the Democrat overall in Wayne County. The new District 54 still contains some of our strongest areas in Wayne County, and also encompasses the newly organized LP in Rush County, which made an excellent showing in the 2011 elections. Henry County also had a strong Libertarian presence in the 2010 election. I believe all of that, combined with the voters growing dissatisfaction with “politics as usual”, gives Jeremiah an excellent shot at being the first Libertarian in Indiana to be elected at the state level.”

Bell also emphasized the importance of having a Libertarian presence in Washington. “We are seeing more and more legislation from the states exercising their 10th Amendment protections from an over-reaching federal government. It’s necessary to have some allies in Congress who will respect and protect not only the 10th Amendment, but all of the Constitution, especially in the wake of the continued growth of both the federal debt and bureaucracy. I hope the people of the 6th District will trust me to be one of those allies.”

Jeremiah Morrell works as a project coordinator for Gerdau, in Muncie. Morrell is a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University with a degree in business. He serves on the Henry County 4-H Association and as a 4-H project leader, and is active with the Libertarian Party.

Morrell on the run for office “I am excited to make the case for freedom. I have watched our government fail to protect our most basic freedoms, and in many cases overstep their authority. I am looking forward to making the case to the people of Henry, Rush, and Wayne counties, demonstrating why there is a true need for something different.”

Libertarians in Indiana Show Strong Signs of Growth, Win Three Local Races

Libertarian candidates around Indiana posted strong numbers for third-party candidates on Election Day. The Libertarian Party of Indiana ran more candidates than any other state Libertarian Party at 45 candidates receiving a total of 59,510 votes.

Most notably, three candidates scored a victory:

  • Susan Bell was re-elected for the second time to the position of Hagerstown Judge. Bell was unopposed in the Wayne County election.
  • In Koskiusko County, Miccah Shepherd was a victor in his race for Claypool Clerk/Treasurer with 44% of the vote in a three-way race.
  • In Hancock County, Dennis Denney won his race for Shirley Town Council by ONE vote.

In Greenfield, a Libertarian candidate had one of the more impressive results in LPIN history. Phil Miller won 42% of the vote in a two-way race with a Republican. Miller, a former Libertarian Greenfield City Councilor, blanketed over 75% of the city with literature with an organized canvassing effort and local advertising.

Two other Mayoral candidates won double-digits in three way races:

  • In Anderson, Rob Jozwiak won 13.67% of the vote.
  • In Rushville, Debbie O’Neal won 15.35% of the vote.

In Warsaw, at-large City Council candidate Dan Stevens won 16% of the vote in a three-way race.

In Indianapolis, At-Large City-Council candidate Bill Levin won over 10,000 voters in the county-wide election. In District 24, sitting at-large City-County Councilor Ed Coleman was not successful in his bid for four more years. He won 24% of the vote.

“I want to thank everyone who came out to support my campaign in 2011,” said Coleman. “It was a great experience, and I am so proud of all of the great support from every level of the Libertarian Party. We had great infrastructure, and showed that Libertarians can run a campaign as well as the establishment. Unfortunately, straight-ticket voting because of the highly contested Mayor’s race was an obstacle our campaign could not overcome. I am confident that this will lay the foundation for a historic 2012 election, and for years to come in Marion County.”

Despite these short term ups and downs, the party had unprecedented activism in the closing weeks of the 2011 Election season.

“Our party passed another milestone towards electoral success in 2011,” said Sam Goldstein, Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Indiana. “These numbers don’t tell the entire story of this election cycle. Almost every campaign outside of Marion County ran effective, professional campaigns. Candidates like Jeff Spoonamore (Greenwood Mayor) and Matt Hisrich (Richmond City Council) put out yard signs, debated opponents, earned media, and made their opponents interview for a job. Inside Marion County, the county party canvassed over 95% of Ed Coleman’s district. They also staffed the polls inside and outside of the polls with over 40 people. These opportunities for those new to the Libertarian Party to learn the nuts and bolts of professional campaigns will be invaluable in 2012. I want to thank every candidate and volunteer for their efforts in this election season, and I want to thank voters for casting their ballot for Libertarians.”

Reason.TV: Libertarian To Be Elected? An Interview with Libertarian City Councilman Ed Coleman

Indianapolis City-County Councilor Ed Coleman recently sat down with Reason.TV:

Press Release: LP of Johnson County Satisfied with Ballot Correction

Today the Johnson County Election Board (JCEB) decided to correct the ballot for the Greenwood municipal election in order to make it compliant with state law.  The Libertarian Party of Johnson County (LPJC) is satisfied with the outcome of the hearing.  At issue was the placement of Libertarian mayoral candidate Jeff Spoonamore’s name relative to the Libertarian party’s actual and legally mandated position upon the ballot. The Independent candidate was incorrectly placed second on the ballot.

LPJC Vice-Chair Erwin Salazar presented an excellent oral argument that the faulty ballots may cause voter confusion.  Cited were a number of prominent legal academics upon the consistent placement of candidates in relation to the presentation of affiliated political parties.

Ultimately the voter confusion argument was not acted upon.  Written objections were filed by voters who are not members of the Libertarian Party.  As required by state law in response to such a written objection, the JCEB ordered the ballots reprinted.

LPJC Chair Frank Rossa said, “It is unfortunate the taxpayers of Johnson County will have to foot the bill for this mistake.  Had the LPJC initially been provided a copy of the ballot this may have been avoided.  The cost of the ballot correction is less than one quarter of what the City of Greenwood spent to study the construction of a swimming pool.  I believe the value of a fair and lawful election exceeds one quarter of a swimming pool study.”

It is interesting to note that the board admitted under questioning by ballot objector Jason Sharp that the replacement ballot had already been ordered, and that it would be available for public testing and review shortly after the conclusion of the hearing.  Thus, the taxpayers were already on the hook no matter the outcome of the hearing.
